So… What exactly is the Merge? 🤯

GM Surgers!

Two things we’re SUPER excited about this week:

📣 We launched a Web3 expert consulting platform

Looking for help with Web3 marketing, accounting, engineering, law, NFTs, DAOs… or maybe you just need help setting up a wallet? 👩🏻‍🏫

Our new dashboard is your key to access an ecosystem of leading crypto experts open to consulting.

Check out our Web3 Expert dashboard to book a sesh, apply as an expert, or hit us up with your feedback!

❣️ Let’s solve real problems, together

As Surge grows, we’re dedicated to solving real problems faced by female-focused crypto communities.

So… through our ~1-2 min survey, we want to understand your pain points and promise to share our findings publicly so the ecosystem can benefit from these findings as well.

We will also be airdropping a Surge Passport NFT filled with educational perks to one of the survey participants!

TLDR: The Ethereum Merge🤝

The main thing you need to know is that the Merge is an upgrade of the Ethereum network.💡

Before we dive in, make sure to read our “What is Ethereum?” article to bring you up to speed.

Now, Ethereum started out as a proof of work (PoW) chain. In PoW chains, consensus is reached by expending computer work, i.e. energy/electricity.

Crypto has been notoriously criticized for being energy-inefficient or wasteful, but that really only relates to PoW chains.

With the Merge, Ethereum will become a proof of stake (PoS) chain, which will reduce Ethereum's energy consumption by ~99.95%. 🎉

But wait… What is actually merging?

Glad you asked.

🛠 Right now, everything you know Ethereum-related happens in what we call the Ethereum Mainnet blockchain. This execution layer is where we build dApps and run smart contracts. This chain is PoW.

💻 But, the Mainnet isn’t the only Ethereum chain that exists. The Beacon Chain was launched in December 2020. This PoS chain is a consensus layer, where people who have staked their ETH will be able to validate and add new blocks.

For two years, this chain has been running in parallel to the Mainnet. If you staked some ETH on exchanges, you’ve been staking on the Beacon Chain, not the Mainnet.

With the Merge, these two chains will… well, merge. 😉

All the history and execution functionality of the Mainnet will merge with the Beacon Chain, and Ethereum will officially transition to a PoS-based consensus.

Some quick facts about the impacts of the Merge:

⏳ The Merge has been postponed several times. No wonder, honestly. It’s a huge technical feat. Currently, Ethereum devs are testing the Merge on test networks (Ropsten and Sepolia done) and everyone and their grandma are hoping the Merge will go live in the last quarter of 2022.

🙃 The gas fees will not come down. Sorry to break the news. You can always use L2s like Optimism or Polygon for lower fees.

⏰ If you staked your ETH in the last two years, you will have to wait some more time (6-12 months) before you can withdraw or claim rewards.

👀 Post-Merge, there will be fewer ETH issued daily. Most predict that Ethereum will become deflationary… spelling good news for supply and demand. NFA.

🚀 The Merge is just the beginning. Read this thread by Vitalik to see the Ethereum roadmap.
